Emma Hartman

Umeå, March 10 - April 15, 2011

Images from the exhibition

On Thursday, the 10th of March, Galleri Andersson/Sandström will exhibit their first exhibition with Emma Hartman. The artist resides in Stockholm, but is well acquainted with Umeå after six years of higher studies at the Umeå School of Fine Arts. Hertman’s paintings are strong in color, with a forceful expression, and her pictorial universe is dominated by two motifs – the landscape and the room

About the Artist
The art of Emma Hartman is distinguished both by her technique and her pictorial language. She is shifting between nature and indoor settings, with color as her main pendulum. In the exhibition, deserted architectural spaces are contrasted by open, desolate landscapes. Her compositions are sharp and well-defined, but simultaneously the color seems to be flowing through the canvas, slowly dissolving in a shimmering fog.  Although connections can be made to Mark Rothko and Francis Bacon, Emma Hartman has found her own painterly language, proudly presented in this exhibition, called ”Overflow”.

Emma Hartman was born in Örebro, in 1974. She lives and works in Stockholm. After early studies at the Gerlesborg School of Art in Stockholm, she graduated from the Umeå School of Fine Arts in 2006. Since the graduate exhibition at Bildmuseet in Umeå, Hartman has had several solo exhibitions in Sweden as well as being awarded with several notable scholarships, supported by the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.
